POWER TRIP aims to solve problems that arise when choosing a musical to perform at your high school, summer camp, community theater, or drama club.

Something that is largely family-appropriate, verging on PG-13, but does not feel explicitly “for children.” Something that can be performed in two hours, with ultra-flexible cast size, and ample comedic features so that no one feels stuck in a faceless chorus. (The guiding principle while writing is that everyone gets a “Courtney, take your break” moment.) It’s that freewheeling “Dungeons and Dragons” campaign you remember fondly, where your DM tried to get you to save a small town from a Dragon, but mentioned a roving band of Clowns as a throwaway joke, and so you ended up following those clowns for two hours.

POWER TRIP is fast, fun, and contemporary; cast and audience alike should feel giddy and exhausted by the end, wondering “how did the time fly?” and “wait, what did happen to those Clowns?

summary

Magic! Chaos! Danger! All things found in the land of Terramagia… centuries ago. Ever since the magic dried up, Terramagia largely deals in rules and order, and the land’s greatest Heroes mostly do clerical work such as inventing new filing systems, or enforcing alternate-side carriage parking.

This is where Maude and Pen - best friends and social outcasts - tour their magic show out of a shoddy caravan. But they have a secret: Pen can do real magic! Nothing that would draw too much attention, of course. Just enough to enhance their show and aid in some light pickpocketing.

When an ancient evil threatens the safety of Terramagia, it’s clear the usual Heroes won’t and can’t do much. So it falls to the unlikeliest of Heroes: Maude, Pen, and the big-hearted (and small-brained) Oodie, to take to the road, uncover some secrets, and save the day!
